Research In Motion is currently seeking a European Patent Attorney (m/f) to join the Standards & Licensing department. The European Patent Attorney will be responsible for a broad range of strategic patent prosecution and opposition related work, particularly oral proceedings and appeals.

The successful individual will interact regularly with research and development personnel as well as senior IP specialists. This individual may also be called upon to support patent litigation, licensing, infringement, and validity matters.

This role will be based preferably either out of RIM's Malmo (SE), Slough (UK) or Bochum (DE) office but flexibility with regards to other European locations may be possible. Travel within Europe and to North America will be required and expected to be about 10% to 15% among these two regions, possibly more around 30 to 40% for candidates interested in working from a remote location.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate's responsibilities will include:

Providing support for prosecuting applications.
You may also have the opportunity to get involved with oral proceedings, oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office.
Driving invention mining and brainstorming sessions and the subsequent follow up for invention disclosures from the engineers and developers.
Reviewing invention disclosure forms for presentation before the patent committee.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be an engineer with experience in cellular/wireless technologies and experience with patent-related activities.
Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science (graduate degree would be preferred) or equivalent experience
European Patent Attorney qualification is essential.
Comprehensive work experience as a patent attorney with a wireless products manufacturer or at a law firm serving wireless or telecommunications industry companies.
Direct client interaction and preparation, filing and management of own patent prosecution files
Self-motivated, initiative, resourceful, and effective organizational abilities.
