As an experienced Web Developer with excellent hands-on development skills especially with JavaScript and PHP experience, you will be in your element in our Programmes and On-Demand (POD) department, part of the wider BBC Future Media (FM) division, joining a world-class team responsible for delivering the next-generation bbc.co.uk website and other online services.

BBC Future Media (FM)'s ambition is to create the world’s most compelling digital media online experiences. We aim to propel the BBC toward an online, on-demand world by finding new ways of reaching audiences wherever they are.

The POD department sits within the FM division and leads the delivery of the BBC’s services for Television and Radio programmes across four screens - Desktop, Tablet, Mobile and Interactive TV platforms. We aim to generate new and exciting innovation and design, bringing BBC to the forefront of technology greatness.

In this role you will contribute to design and build of all front-end components (presentation, templating, controller, client-side behaviour, integration to data services etc). You’ll write advanced JavaScript applications using techniques such as AJAX, DOM manipulation and use of JavaScript libraries as well as writing complex code using semantic X/HTML, CSS and other equivalent client side technologies to create content production templates or other interactive elements. As an experienced Web Developer you will of course also template code sections using PHP or similar technologies.

You will liaise with the product manager and technical architect to ensure that all technical possibilities are explored and that products achieve the best possible look, feel and functionality as well as liaising with designers and software engineers throughout the project phase to produce working designs.

You will have excellent hands-on dev skills and proven industry experience in:

  • Object Oriented JavaScript, including the use of AJAX techniques
  • CSS
  • X/HTML
  • PHP
  • MVC frameworks, especially Zend
  • Cross-browser compatibility and accessibility
  • XML based data sources, JSON etc

In addition to these, you will have knowledge and commercial experience of accessibility, usability and cross-browser issues and have the ability to rapidly and effectively understand and translate client business requirements into technical solutions.

You’ll have experience of working in an environment where products have to be delivered to specific time-scales coupled with well-developed analytical and investigative skills. To compliment this you will have a good understanding of open web standards (such as W3C) & internet protocols as well as experience of supporting, modifying and maintaining systems and code developed by teams other than your own.
