The BBC are looking for an Operations Engineer to join our 24/7 Operations Team within Future Media (FM) Digital Distribution & Operations.

 

The team is responsible for the management and 24/7 technical support of the BBC's systems, distribution infrastructure and applications, enabling the award winning bbc.co.uk website including News, Sport, iPlayer, Mobile and Interactive Television Services (red button) to function. We are also at the forefront of the BBC’s future media technology development.

 

You will be part of the wider FM Operations department, who are the people working behind the scenes to keep the BBC’s online services up and running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The services we maintain include the BBC News and Sport web sites and the highly popular BBC iPlayer.

You will manage a team of 24/7 Operations engineers on a dedicated 24/7 shift rota, reporting to the 24/7 Operations Manager. You will provide comprehensive Linux Operations and management expertise and be responsible for monitoring the BBC online Infrastructure through a mixture of bespoke and industry standard monitoring tools and initial trouble shooting, using defined procedures and run books. The Shift Leader will be responsible for monitoring various elements of the Infrastructure, including servers, network devices, storage, backup devices and databases as well as the online service applications and content delivery systems.

**Please note that this is shift work and will include some nights**

The 5 week, 10 hour shift pattern consists of 7x day shifts (07:00-17:00) 5x mid shifts (11:30-21:30) and 7x night shifts (21:15-07:15) the role works 2 out of 5 weekends (12hr shifts)

 

• Extensive experience of administering Linux / Redhat (essential)

• Experience of web-serving environments (Apache, Tomcat etc.)

• Strong knowledge of (ITIL) Incident management

• Experience of HTML/CSS/XML/RSS

• Experience of Internet connectivity technologies (DNS)

 

We’d also like you to have knowledge of ITIL principles as listed below and how they relate to other IT disciplines:

 

• Service Operations

• Change & Release Management

• Incident Management

• Problem Management

• Event Management
